This handmade winter card brings together colorful Distress Oxide ink blending, fluffy texture, and a little snowman sarcasm. During this week’s Joy Takes the Challenge on the Pajama Crafter Stamps YouTube channel, I shared a sneak peek of Snow Laughing Matter, a stamp set coming later in October. If this fellow is any indication, winter is going to come with plenty of personality!
Mr. Wheel also gave us an interesting Craft Roulette assignment: create a card on a card. Naturally, we added a snowstorm. Around here, we like our challenges with a little flurry of excitement.

Creating a Snowy Night Sky with Distress Oxide Inks
The ink-blended background sets the mood for this winter scene. I used Distress Oxides in Twisted Citron, Broken China, Prize Ribbon, Wilted Violet, and Black Soot to create a colorful nighttime sky.
The bright glow around the lamppost draws your eye into the scene, while the surrounding blues and purples give the background that chilly, after-dark feeling. The deeper edges frame the image and help the white snowman and falling snow stand out.
That contrast is what makes this snowy night sky so striking. The light feels brighter because it has those dark colors beside it. If you tend to hesitate before reaching for your darkest ink, this is a fun reminder of how much depth it can bring to a handmade card.
The scattered white snowfall adds movement throughout the background, making it feel as though our snowman is standing right in the middle of a winter flurry.
Adding Fluffy Texture to a Snowman’s Hat
A winter hat should look warm enough to wear, even when its owner is made of snow!
I added texture paste to the hat’s trim and pom-pom to create a furry effect. That raised, fluffy detail gives the card another layer of interest and makes the bright red hat even more eye-catching.
The red and turquoise scarf adds cheerful color against the cool background, while the long orange carrot nose delivers plenty of personality. Sparkling accents catch the light, and a little red heart brings a sweet touch to this snowy scene.
Then there’s that sentiment. The crisp white strip makes the punch line easy to read and gives this funny snowman card its finishing touch. A beautiful winter scene can still have a sense of humor!
A Card on a Card: A2 Meets A7
For the Craft Roulette project requirement, I made an A2 card and attached it to a larger A7 card measuring 5 × 7 inches.
The smaller card becomes the focal point, while the larger base gives the design extra room to shine. Dark matting frames the snowy scene, and the blue and turquoise outer layers echo the colors of the sky.
It’s a fun cardmaking idea when you want to give a familiar A2 design a little more presence. The layered format adds an extra opening element, making the card itself part of the surprise.

How This Card Fits the Craft Roulette Parameters
Mr. Wheel chose four parameters, and here’s how I worked each one into this winter card:
Project: Card on a Card
An A2 card attached to a larger 5 × 7-inch A7 card fulfilled the layered card requirement.
Element: Water(s)(ing)
Snow is water, so this snowy scene had us covered!
Colors: Celebration
Reds, purples, blues, and yellow brought a festive mix to the snowman, nighttime sky, and glowing lamppost.
Random: Confetti
The falling snow became “God’s confetti,” scattered across the scene like a little winter celebration.
That’s one of my favorite things about playing along with Craft Roulette. The parameters encourage us to look at our stamps, colors, and supplies with fresh eyes. A challenge that sounds unusual at first can lead to a card you might never have thought to make.

Would you give this snowy night sky a try? And be honest—does that carrot make his nose look big?
