Thanksgiving dinner comes with turkey, pumpkin pie, and occasionally a relative who likes to stir more than the gravy. This funny handmade Thanksgiving card has a little something for all three!

During this episode of Joy Takes the Challenge, Joy combined the Food Coma stamp set, colorful fall leaves, and layered tags to create a Thanksgiving card packed with texture and personality. The front sets the mood with “Serving family drama since 1621,” while the inside delivers one more playful jab.

A Thanksgiving Card Full of Fall Color and Personality

This card gives traditional autumn colors a fresh twist. Deep teal frames the design, while warm orange, brown, cream, and metallic gold bring in the cozy feeling of fall.

The Autumn Whispers patterned papers pair a crisp plaid background with a delicate botanical print on the focal tag. Those different patterns add interest while keeping the turkey center stage—and this googly-eyed fellow certainly looks like he has witnessed a holiday gathering or two!

An oversized gold “YIKES” from the Dang Whoa Yikes dies makes an immediate statement at the top. Natural twine, layered tags, teal accents, and a tiny red heart finish the design with a mix of rustic texture and shine.

It’s a handmade card that practically comes with its own dinner-table commentary.

Creating Textured Fall Leaves with Distress Oxides

One of the techniques shared during the live was how to give die-cut leaves extra detail using a stylus.

Joy used the Oak and Maple Dies to cut her leaves, then embossed veining with a stylus and applied Distress Oxides to create their autumn color. The visible vein detail and variations of golden yellow, orange, and brown give the leaves a wonderfully weathered appearance.

Tucked around the tags, the leaves soften the straight edges of the layered papers and help frame the stamped turkey.

This technique would also be beautiful on fall birthday cards, Thanksgiving place cards, gift tags, or autumn scrapbook pages. Watch the replay to see Joy demonstrate the process.

Coloring Turkeys and Pumpkins with OLO Markers

The Food Coma Ready images bring the comedy, and Joy’s OLO marker coloring brings them to life.

Warm browns give the turkeys dimension, while bold red tail feathers and bright yellow details keep the images lively against the patterned papers. The pumpkins add another pop of seasonal orange.

Small white highlights help emphasize the shapes and add playful finishing details. And those googly eyes? They take the turkey’s expression from amusing to “Who invited the whole family?”

If you enjoy alcohol marker coloring for card making, the replay lets you follow Joy as she colors the turkeys and pumpkins and builds this layered fall design.

The Craft Roulette Parameters

This episode’s Craft Roulette challenge called for four ingredients:

  • Project: Include a Tag
  • Element: New (new sentiment, new wobblers, new crafters wand
  • Colors: Library (warm, browns, teals, and oranges
  • Random: Pencil(s) Inside sentiment

Layered tags became a major part of the card’s design, giving the turkey a patterned backdrop and creating space for twine, leaves, and metallic accents.

For the library color theme, the finished palette brings to mind rich book covers, warm wood shelves, and softly aged pages. Teal, brown, cream, and gold work beautifully alongside the brighter autumn details.

The “New” element was also part of the challenge. Catch the replay to follow Joy’s explanation of her choices as the project comes together. New inside sentiment, new crafter’s wand,

And the pencil requirement? That little twist deserves a look inside.

A Funny Inside Sentiment That Finishes the Story

Open the card and you’ll find another colorful turkey beneath the sentiment:

“I’ll pencil you in case nothing better comes up”

A yellow pencil illustration completes the joke and fulfills the pencil parameter with a wink.

It’s a cheeky little jab for the family member who always brings the drama—and a fun reminder that the inside of a handmade card can carry just as much personality as the front.

The simple white interior panel gives the sentiment room to shine, while the turkey ties the inside back to the richly layered front.
