Could you create a handmade card from scratch in only 15 minutes? DANG—that is not much time!
I recently played along with Card Chaos: The Quarter-Hour Card Challenge, where the goal is to design and complete a card in just 15 minutes. As if racing the clock wasn’t chaotic enough, this episode’s challenge required us to use three different patterned papers on one card.
Challenge accepted!
Three Patterned Papers, One Playful Design
For my three-patterned-paper combination, I chose coordinating designs from the Sugarplum Wishes 6×6 Paper Pack. The warm cream, dusty pink, rich plum, and touches of gold gave the card a festive look without relying on traditional red-and-green Christmas colors.
I used one patterned paper as the main background and layered another behind it to create a rich plum border. A third design was tucked into the upper portion of the card for another pop of color and texture.
And because apparently a 15-minute card challenge wasn’t chaotic enough, I even fussy cut one of the patterned-paper elements! The large leaf at the top adds movement, dimension, and an unexpected seasonal accent.
A Peek-a-Boo Layer with Plenty of Texture
The Peek a Boo Circle Die was cut from deep teal cardstock and placed behind the stamped image. Its open, web-like design allows the patterned papers underneath to peek through while creating contrast against the warm background.
This circular element also helps guide the eye toward the adorable bear from the Cheers to the Season Stamp Set. The teal, plum, and cream layers provide a beautiful backdrop for the brighter reds in the bear’s Santa hat, shiny nose, cup, and presents.
Small sparkling embellishments scattered across the teal circle add just enough shine without overwhelming the design.
DANG—That’s a Big Statement!
The oversized DANG makes an unapologetically bold focal point across the top of the card. Its deep plum letters coordinate with the patterned-paper layers and balance the weight of the sentiment strip near the bottom.
The playful sentiment, “Santa says it’s okay to spike it,” fits this mischievous little bear perfectly. White embossing against the dark plum cardstock keeps the greeting crisp, readable, and connected to the rest of the color palette.
There is so much personality packed into this card—from the bear peeking over his oversized cup to the presents gathered around his feet. The combination of bold lettering, festive coloring, dimensional layers, and elegant patterned papers gives it a fun grown-up Christmas feel.
Creating Under Pressure
A 15-minute handmade card challenge forces you to make decisions quickly. There is no time to overthink every paper, embellishment, or layer. You choose what feels right, keep moving, and trust the creative process.
Did I choose multiple patterned papers, create layered die cuts, add dimension, and fussy cut during a quarter-hour challenge? I sure did! Sometimes a little creative chaos brings out ideas we may never have discovered while carefully planning every detail.
That is exactly what makes challenges like Card Chaos so much fun. They encourage us to stretch our creativity, use the supplies we already love, and remember that card making does not have to be perfect to be joyful.
