There is something about a chubby little winter bird that immediately makes a handmade card feel extra cozy, and this sweet guy from the Cozy Chirps stamp set by Pajama Crafter Stamps absolutely stole the show during today’s YouTube Live.
For this card, I wanted a warm, rustic winter look rather than a traditional bright Christmas palette. The combination of rich blue Copic coloring, earthy browns, taupe patterned paper, natural cardstock, and pops of holiday red gives this project a wonderful woodland Christmas card feel.
And can we talk about that pine cone hat? This pudgy little bird looks like he dressed himself for winter and I am completely here for it
Creating a Warm, Rustic Winter Card
I paired the Cozy Chirps stamp set with the newly restocked Taupe Tidings paper pack from Pajama Crafter Stamps, and I love how beautifully the muted taupe pattern frames the hand-colored image.
The layers of Pebbled Beach cardstock really help establish the entire mood of the card. Instead of a stark white card base, the soft sandy neutral creates warmth and complements the browns in the pine cone, the bird’s belly, and the vintage-style ink blending around the edges.
The distressed-edge rectangular layers add even more texture and give this handmade winter card an almost storybook or vintage postcard appearance.
Copic Coloring Brings This Winter Bird to Life
The focal point is definitely the coloring. Deep navy blues give the bird wonderful dimension, while the warm neutral belly keeps him soft and cuddly-looking.
I used the following Copic marker combinations:
Pine Cone: E29, E27, E25, E23
Bird – Blue Feathers: B99, B97, B95, B93, B91
Bird – Belly: E47, E44, E43, E42
Pomegranate: R39, R37, R35, R32
Berries: R59, R29, R46, R24
Holly: YG76, YG63, YG61
Spruce: BG78, BG75, BG72
One of my favorite details is the white highlighting throughout the image. Those tiny white marks on the pine cone, feathers, fruit, berries, and greenery create incredible texture and make the entire illustration feel almost frosted with snow.

Little Details That Make a Big Difference
I wanted plenty of interest without taking attention away from our adorable bird, so I added several subtle details.
The patterned paper creates a soft frame around the image, while the distressed layers help pull your eye toward the center. The sentiment, “Sending Sunshine on a Snowy Day,” stretches right across the pine cone and adds a sweet message that makes this card perfect for more than Christmas.
This could easily become a winter friendship card, thinking of you card, encouragement card, holiday card, or just-because handmade card.
I also wrapped natural twine across the bottom of the image panel. That simple addition adds real texture and reinforces the rustic woodland feeling of the entire design.

A Winter Card That Feels Cozy Instead of Cold
What I love most about this card is the contrast.
You have snow, evergreen branches, deep winter blues, and frosty pine cones—but the Pebbled Beach cardstock, warm taupes, rich browns, and bright red fruit keep the project from ever feeling cold.
It is exactly the kind of cozy handmade Christmas card I love creating: whimsical, beautifully colored, full of texture, and just a little unexpected.
That pudgy little bird definitely has personality, and I think he knows he looks fabulous in his pine cone hat.
