There’s something special about creating handmade cards that honor the brave men and women who serve our country. Whether you’re making cards for military families, veterans, active-duty service members, or patriotic holidays, a handcrafted card carries a heartfelt message of gratitude that words alone often cannot express.
For today’s projects, I combined the Freedom Soars Stencil with Distress Oxide Inks and the Freedom Isn’t Free Stamp Set to create two patriotic cards that celebrate courage, sacrifice, and American pride.

Card One: Bold Patriotic Eagle and Military Tribute
The first card features a dramatic background created with the Freedom Soars Stencil. Using red and blue Distress Oxide Inks, I blended a striking American flag and eagle design across the card panel. The soft ink blending creates depth while allowing the powerful imagery to take center stage.
To bring additional dimension and storytelling to the card, I added images from the Freedom Isn’t Free Stamp Set, including:
- A sailor colored with Copic markers
- A military ship
- A Coast Guard serviceman
- The sentiment “Freedom Isn’t Free”
The layered arrangement creates a meaningful scene that recognizes the sacrifices made by those who protect our freedoms every day. The contrast between the bold stenciled background and the detailed Copic-colored images makes this card especially eye-catching.
Design Tips Used:
- Blend Distress Oxide Inks in light layers for smooth transitions.
- Use foam adhesive to create dimension between elements.
- Keep the sentiment simple and powerful to reinforce the theme.
- Add black matting to frame the design and make the colors pop.
Card Two: Clean and Classic Patriotic Design
For the second card, I took a different approach while still using the Freedom Soars Stencil. This time, I paired the eagle image with a warm sunburst background to create a bright, uplifting patriotic design.
The circular focal point showcases the eagle and American flag imagery beautifully while allowing the background rays to draw the eye directly toward the center.
The sentiment:
“Freedom Isn’t Free – Home of the Free Because of the Brave”
adds a meaningful message that perfectly complements the patriotic theme.
A few strategically placed gems provide subtle sparkle without distracting from the focal image.

Why This Design Works:
- Strong focal point created with the circular frame.
- Warm sunburst background adds energy and optimism.
- Minimal embellishments keep the design clean and elegant.
- Patriotic colors instantly communicate the theme.
Coloring with Copics
For both projects, I colored the stamped images with Copic markers, focusing on soft shading and realistic details. The bright uniforms and expressive characters help personalize the cards and create an emotional connection with the recipient.
Copic coloring pairs beautifully with Distress Oxide blended backgrounds because the alcohol markers provide crisp, vibrant details against the soft ink-blended surfaces.
Perfect Occasions for Patriotic Handmade Cards
These designs would be wonderful for:
- Fourth of July cards
- Veterans Day cards
- Memorial Day cards
- Military appreciation cards
- Deployment encouragement cards
- Welcome home cards
- Thank you cards for service members
