Sympathy cards can be some of the most meaningful—and most difficult—cards to make. When someone is going through a loss, finding a way to express love, comfort, and hope through creativity becomes a quiet, healing gift.
This week on YouTube Live, we explored the question:
Can a rainbow express sympathy?
And the answer is a gentle, heartfelt yes.

The Meaning Behind the Rainbow 🌈
The rainbow is more than just a beautiful sight in the sky. It’s a powerful symbol of God’s covenant with mankind—His promise that He would never again destroy the Earth with a flood. Beyond that, the rainbow represents hope, rebirth, and forgiveness.
That, to me, is everything someone would want to feel during a time of loss.
It’s no surprise that many people share stories of seeing a rainbow—or even being drawn outside to witness one—right around the time a loved one passes. Multiple family members, unaware of each other’s feelings, often describe the same pull to look at the sky, only to see vibrant bands of color arching overhead. It’s a moment that brings comfort and wonder, reminding us of something bigger than ourselves.
The Card Design 🖌️
For this week’s project, we used Distress Inks to softly blend a rainbow across the card panel, focusing on a soothing wash of color. Over that, we stamped the Birds of a Feather image from the Pajama Crafter Stamps collection.
- In one version, we left the birds in simple black for a minimalist and peaceful look.
- In another, we used cool gray Copic markers to add subtle shading and depth—bringing the birds to life and capturing that classic “birds on a wire” scene.

To finish off the design, we added a die-cut “Prayers” sentiment and a sprinkle of neutral confetti embellishments for a soft, understated touch.
A Card Filled with Comfort
This project reminded me that card making is more than crafting—it’s a way to communicate when words feel too small. A simple rainbow can hold so much meaning, and paired with heartfelt stamps and gentle color, it becomes a tangible piece of peace.
