Water Coloring With 3D Embossing Folders

Hello friends! Do you have a lot of embossing folders, but you’re not sure how to use them in new and fresh ways? If so you may be surprised to know you can water color with them. I decided to use the 3D embossing folder from Altenew called, Spoon Daisy using a polychromatic design. Polychromatic design use more than one color that are similar or close to one another on the color wheel, making them mix with ease.

To create this card, I started by embossing the Spoon Daisy onto Canson XL watercolor paper sized to 4.25 x 5.5 inches. I chose watercolor paper because I love the deep impressions obtained with it and I planned to watercolor the image. Typically people think of embossing a solid panel of card stock to create a background, and sometimes apply ink blending, or waxes, but rarely do you see embossed panels water colored which is why I wanted to share it with you.

Don’t you just love all the texture and nuggets of color on this image? I chose to use pinks, corals, and yellows to create the polychromatic design in the floral because the play very nice together due to be close together on the color wheel. I used my darkest Karin Brush Pro Marker in the color Rose pink to lay down the shadow along the petals. If you don’t know where the shadows belong, you can hold the panel up to a light and tilt it creating a shadow because this is a 3D image. I used a slightly damp brush to pull the color out and did each petal one at a time. Once the layers were dry I came in with Soft Peach 2 and Gold to add the contrast and highlights to the petals. I think the key take away is letting the layers dry in between applications.

Sticking with the polychromatic theme, I used Gold and Sandstone to create the center or stamen of the flower. But I wanted to throw in a twist and use a complimentary color, or one that is opposite on the color wheel to create the background. Since my primary color of the Spoon Daisy is orange, I chose blue (aqua) in this case. For added interest, I splattered the panel with white acrylic paint.

While the panel dried, I stamped and embossed the sentiment with white powder onto black cardstock. I then die cut the Sentiment Strip with a fisthtail banner. Once the panel was completely dried, I popped it up with foam tape and adhered it to a top folding A2 card base.
