Water Coloring With Ink Pads

Hello friends, I am back with another project for the Altenew Educator’s Certification Program. Currently I am working on completing level 2, and had the pleasure of taking the Creative Watercolor Media course. I decided to work with the In My Thoughts stamp set from Altenew, and water colored it using Crisp Dye Inks. I had so much fun with this process and want to share it with you.

To create my card I stamped the In My Thoughts outlined tree stamp with Versafine Clair Nocturne ink and heat embossed with clear embossing powder before water coloring it. I chose to use Altenew’s Crisp Dye Inks in the colors: Caramel Toffee, Paper Bag, Pink Diamond, Rubellite, Razzleberry, Dew Drop, Aqualilcious, and Firefly for my color palette. In addition I used Memento’s Rich Cocoa because I don’t own a true brown ink from Altenew yet. But I want to mention that these inks play nice with one another because they are all dye inks.

I used a couple of different techniques while water coloring this scene. First I want to mention that the embossed lines of the tree create a “well’ which contains or controls the colors you drop in if you are not looking for a loose water color appearance. This is exactly what I used to color the bark of the tree using a very fine brush with minimum water. For the softest pink color I used to map out my florals and used a more loose technique with more water. Before adding any more color I dried the panel so that layering the inks would give the illusion of layers of bark. When adding the darker colors of the flowers I used a very dry brush and stippled the color to create the texture of the petals. Finally for the background I used a wet on wet technique that gives a very loose water color interpretation. Basically I added clean water to the areas and dropped in the colors and let them organically spread. But the entire time I used ink smooshed from my ink pads, which really stretched my supplies.

I wanted to add more interest to may card so I die cut the Diamond Frame Coverplate and applied it to the focal point and then added a sentiment strip from the same stamp set after embossing it. Finally I added a few pink sequins from my stash to adorn the card.

Below you will find a complete process video if you are interested. I would truly love it if you would considering leaving me comment on my channel and maybe subscribing!
