Who says skeletons have to be scary? This wide-eyed cutie is serving more sweet than spooky in this playful Halloween card created during Joy Takes the Challenge on the Pajama Crafter Stamps YouTube channel.
During this episode, I played along with the latest Craft Roulette cardmaking challenge while sharing a special sneak peek of the new Peek-a-Boo Bones stamp set from Pajama Crafter Stamps. Between her enormous sparkling eyes, bright pink bow, tiny painted fingernails, and cheeky peek over the ledge, this little skeleton has personality from the top of her skull to the tips of her bony fingers!
A Colorful Halloween Card with Dramatic Contrast
I colored the Peek-a-Boo Bones character with Copic alcohol markers, using warm ivory tones for her bones rather than stark white. This gives the skeleton more depth and allows the bright blue eyes and vivid pink bow to jump right off the card.
The oversized eyes immediately become the focal point. Layers of turquoise, deep blue, gray, black, and white create a glassy, animated appearance filled with expression. Three tiny white highlight dots added to the eyes bring them to life while also helping fulfill one of the Craft Roulette parameters.
Behind the skeleton, the rich blue and violet background creates a wonderfully moody nighttime atmosphere. The intense jewel tones are balanced by the warm cream-colored foreground, orange pumpkin, golden fall leaves, earthy browns, and sparse black shrubbery.
A sliver of Rainbow Prism specialty paper peeks out from beneath the dark layers, catching the light with flashes of rainbow color. It is a small detail, but it gives this handmade Halloween card an unexpected magical glow.
Creating Background Texture with a Copic Colorless Blender
One of the most interesting techniques in this project is the textured background. Instead of using the Copic colorless blender only to erase mistakes or soften an edge, I used it in a much more creative and nontraditional way.
The colorless blender reacts with the blue and violet Copic ink to lift and move the color, producing the mottled, atmospheric finish you see in the background. The resulting texture adds movement and dimension without competing with the stamped image.
This is such a fun reminder that the Copic Colorless Blender 0 is not really a traditional blending marker. It is a color-pushing and color-lifting tool that can be used to create highlights, patterns, texture, and special effects.
Craft Roulette Parameters
Every Craft Roulette challenge begins with four randomly selected parameters. Here is how I incorporated each one into this design:
Project: Include an ATC
The required Artist Trading Card, or ATC, was incorporated into the card’s layered focal design. Its smaller format works beautifully with the peek-a-boo composition and adds another dimensional element to the finished project.
Colors: Produce Aisle
The produce aisle offers far more colors than green! I drew inspiration from blueberries, blackberries, eggplant, radishes, pumpkins, squash, and leafy greens. The combination of deep blue, violet, bright pink, orange, cream, brown, and green creates a fresh interpretation of a Halloween color palette.
Element: Tree or Trees
Rather than adding a large, obvious tree image, I interpreted this parameter through texture and natural details. The bold black frame has a pronounced woodgrain texture, while the background and lower scene contain sparse stamped shrubbery. Together, these elements create the feeling of a shadowy outdoor setting without distracting from the Peek-a-Boo Bones character
Random: Three Circles
This parameter appears in several clever places throughout the card. I included two circle die cuts, scattered sparkling rhinestones around the design, and added three tiny highlight dots to the character’s expressive eyes. Those little circular accents carry the viewer’s eye around the card while adding just the right amount of sparkle.
Framing the Peek-a-Boo Scene
The bold black wood-textured frame is especially effective because it does more than fulfill the tree parameter—it creates a scene within the scene.
The skeleton appears to be peeking through the opening and resting her hands on the ledge, giving the card wonderful depth. The black frame also breaks up the blue background and cream foreground while visually connecting the black card base, stamped shrubbery, sentiment strip, and character details.
The white embossed sentiment, “Have a wicked good time!”, adds a crisp finishing touch beneath the frame. Its slightly crooked placement suits the playful, imperfect personality of the design and helps the card feel fun rather than frightening.
