Who says a book binding card has to be horizontal? For this cheerful handmade ladybug card, I turned the traditional fun-fold design on its side and created a portrait-style book binding card filled with bold color, playful patterns, and plenty of buggy personality!
Featuring the adorable Buggin’ You Stamp Set from Pajama Crafter Stamps, this card combines grid stamping, alcohol marker coloring, handmade patterned paper, and an unexpected fun-fold design. The result is a bright and whimsical card that is perfect for sending a little love—or letting someone know you’re thinking about them “bug time!”
Creating a Grid-Style Stamped Card
The grid challenge gave me the perfect opportunity to repeat the sweet ladybug and flower image from the Buggin’ You Stamp Set. I arranged four stamped images in a structured grid formation, creating a balanced design while allowing each little ladybug to have its own moment to shine.
Repeating one stamped image is an easy way to stretch your stamp collection and create a strong focal point. The symmetrical arrangement also helps the detailed images feel organized rather than busy.
Each ladybug and flower image was colored with alcohol markers. The brilliant reds and sunny yellows pop beautifully against the gray grid background, while the touches of green help bring the garden scene to life.
A Portrait-Style Book Binding Card
Book binding cards are normally created in a landscape format, but I wanted to shake things up by turning this one into a portrait card.
The bound section runs across the top of the card, giving it the appearance of a playful notebook or garden journal. Black twine tied around the binding adds texture and reinforces the handmade notebook style.
This portrait orientation also provided plenty of vertical space for the stamped ladybugs and tall flowers. It is a fun reminder that card-fold tutorials can be adapted to fit your images and creative vision. There are no cardmaking police here—turn that design around and make it your own!
Handmade Patterned Paper Sneak Peek
Did you notice the coordinating grid and polka-dot papers? I created this patterned paper myself, and it is a little sneak peek of things to come from Pajama Crafter Stamps!
The gray notebook-inspired grid paper provided the perfect background for this project. I also stamped the “Love you bug time” sentiment onto the same grid design, tying the entire card together.
A coral-red paper with oversized black polka dots frames the focal panel and coordinates perfectly with the red and black ladybugs. The mix of grids, dots, and bold color gives this handmade card a fun, modern feel without competing with the stamped images.
You may want to keep your crafty eyes open—there could be more coordinating paper goodness coming your way!
Playing Along with Craft Roulette
This card was inspired by the latest Craft Roulette cardmaking challenge, which included the following creative parameters:
- Project: Book Binding Card
- Element: Plants
- Colors: Market
- Random: Grid or Gridlines
Every parameter found its way into the finished design. The flowers satisfied the plant element, while the warm red, yellow, green, black, and gray palette created a lively market-inspired color combination.
The grid parameter appeared twice—first in the arrangement of the stamped images and again in my handmade grid patterned paper. When a challenge gives you gridlines, you might as well use them everywhere!
Finishing the Ladybug Card
To complete the design, I added the “Love you bug time” sentiment across the center of the card using dimensional adhesive. This placement breaks up the grid slightly while still allowing all four ladybugs to remain visible.
A scattering of colorful rhinestones adds just the right amount of sparkle. The small gems catch the light without overwhelming the alcohol marker coloring or the strong graphic patterns.
Between the cheerful ladybugs, bright flowers, notebook-inspired paper, and unexpected portrait fold, this card feels playful, polished, and full of personality.
