Hi friends! You know I like to work with many mediums, but I need to justify the purchase try to come up at least 5 ways to use before taking the plunge. At a recent class I taught in Somerset Kentucky, I demoed The Crafters Work Shop Stencil Butters and I paired them with the Cardinal stamp set from Prickley Pear Stamps.
The first technique I want to talk about is, these “butters” are water reactive and can be broken down by adding water to them. I suggest scrooping a little bit out onto a glass surface and spraying them until your desired consistency. I applied approximately 4 colors to the background by doing an “ink” smooshing technique. But they key step is adding drops of an White Pigment ink Re-inker. This is what makes the colors pop so much on black watercolor paper. Super cool huh?
I used the same ink smooshing technique for the second card using different colors. Then I stamped the Cardinal and branch onto the dried panel using Versafine Clair Nocturne Ink and applied clear embossing powder. This second technique isn’t something that can usually be done because butters or mouses usually bubble up when in contact with a heat gun. I made sure to heat my gun up for 30 seconds before applying the heat and kept it moving. This way I assured even heating, preventing any bubbly. I repeated this with white embossing powder for the sentiments.
The third example was my attempt to watercolor with the butters. I admit I was rushed and didn’t do a great job. But the key is we can water color by making a palette and adding water. I picked up the color with a water brush. I do love how milky the colors are though!!! In this example I didn’t add white pigment ink to the butters.
I did a fourth example and forgot to save a picture of it. What I didn’t was add stencil butters directly to the paper using no water or white pigment ink. I just smeared a yellow, orange, and red over the panel using a palette knife to apply it in 3 stripes. It dried super fast, and I was able to stamp a black silhouette image, in this case the music sheet included in the stamp set. In this case I used a juicy crisp dye ink. So this shows you can add something new to stash and combine them with your existing stash. So cool right?
