The Power of Threes in Card Design

Hello my friends! How are you! Wow! I feel like I have made a lot of cards today! Anyhow I just went love over on the Prickley Pear Pals Facebook page with this card, so I thought I would share it with you. This isn’t a technique heavy card, but I used tried and true design elements that I learned all the way back in High School while doing the year book… do they even make those anymore? I’m dating myself now!

Working in odd numbers, especially three is very pleasing to the eye and it has been scientifically proven that it maintains people’s interest longer. This is why you will see most graphic design done this way. Also presenting images so that they are facing inward and not off the page captures the eye. If for instance the butterfly on the right was facing to the right or looking off the page, the viewer would automatically look for more action to be going on outside of the frame. My sweet yearbook teacher taught me that while I was learning how to make layouts for my senior year. There aren’t many things I remember about that class except for who I was dating, the rule of thirds and positioning images. Can you tell I was ready to get out of school… or was I boy crazy? Both!

As you can tell I stamped the Sketched Florals Lavender along the left of the card and matted it in a darker shade to make it pop. I did the same with the Mini Butterflies 2 images as well. I tend to like texture an dimension on my cards, so I made sure to stamp the images with Memento Tuxedo Black Ink because I know that I can use other dye inks to blend over it and not smear it. Some black dye inks on the market are known to smear when other dye inks are blended with them, so be sure to do a test run ahead of time.
