Traditional Style With A Twist

Hello friends! I just took a course called “With A Twist” from Altenew and it really made me think about how to take my cards to the next level by adding a few unexpected elements. I took this course as part of the Altenew Educator’s Certification Program and if you’re interested in finding out more about the program follow the link. The card I am sharing today has a lot of traditional or vintage elements mixed with modern and new touches. I really think you are going to love this card, as it is different for me. Let’s take a look…

I love the Cora Louise Build A Flower set because it reminds me of my Mom, and staying true to her I used coral tones because they were her favorite. I think of peonies as being traditional, but I wanted to pair it with the unexpected, or the twist. In this case I used grays for leaves and for the outline of the flower. In addition to that I created a window in the card front to showcase the sentiment, also using a geometric design. Anytime you can add acetate to card it elevates it to a more professional level, in my opinion at least. I wasn’t sure how I was going to like the geometric shapes of the Sohcahtoa stamp set paired with the florals, but I am really loving it.

I mentioned the stamping of the Cora Louise Peony, which has five layers if you include the outlined image. I stamped the flowers with Altenew’s Crisp Dye Inks in the colors: Industrial Diamond, Rose Quartz, Pink Pearl, Coral Bliss and Warm Sunshine. Try saying that three times fast! For the leaves I used the following 3 colors: Limestone, Industrial Diamond, Silverstone. And while I am listing the colors, I used Industrial Diamond for the sentiment. For the fun triangles, I used the Rose Quartz.

Once I was finished stamping the 3 flowers and coordinating foliage, I went to work on the “window” layer. To create the window, I cut two 4.25 x 5.5 inch panels and one inch off the bottom of both laying them aside. I then cut another inch off of both panels and discarded them. I then used double sided tape to adhere clear acetate in the absent area. The reason I needed two panels was because I wanted a strong and dimensional panel.

My next step was to line up an A2 card base inside my Misti and stamp the sentiment in the center of the windowed area. After the sentiment was in place I used a solid and striped triangle from the Sohcahtoa stamp set and lined them up to create a modern design in the same area. I did this by sliding the cardstock over while keeping the stamps in the same position on the Misti door. After the I adhered the entire windowed panel to the card base using foam tape.

Finally, I am getting to the fun part, arranging the Cora Louise Peony images which I placed in a trio with them going off the page as to keep the eye moving. I also used several leaves and curled them slightly with a bone folder to give yet more dimension to the card. I think the bundle of gold wire and gold gems added just the perfect amount of traditional shine to offset the modern touches. What do you think? Did I pull it off?

I am including a process video below in case you are interested in recreating this card. I hope you do!

Just a small disclaimer! All items used in all of my projects are (or have been) purchased with my own funds, but this does not include design team items that I have received or otherwise stated.
